what is asthma?
it’s a long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs
what are the causes of asthma?
possible genetic and environmental factors.
what are the symptoms of asthma?
breathlessness, wheezing and coughing
how is asthma monitored?
peak flow or spirometry and regular checks with a GP or asthma nurse
what treatments are available for people with asthma?
- relieve inhaler (blue) fast acting relaxes muscles in bronchi.
- preventing inhaler (brown) used daily, reduced inflammation
- inhalers are portable and unobtrusive but need to be used correctly so not great for children.
- use of spacers with inhalers or nebuliser improves the uptake of the drug.
- steroid or other medication may be required.
what are other ways to reduce the symptoms of asthma?
- avoiding triggers (stress, pollution, pollen ect)
- attending regular check ups
- flu jab for extra protection, reducing risks
- exercising regular
- keeping a healthy weight
what is emphysema?
a type of COPDs where your airways are narrowed, and the alveoli are damaged
what are the causes of emphysema?
smoking and pollution
what are symptoms of emphysema?
breathlessness, phlegm, coughing and wheezing
how is emphysema monitored?
peak flow or spirometry/ chest x-ray/ CT scan / regular check ups
what are the emphysema treatments?
- inhalers (bronchodilators) so it widens your airways.
- corticosteroid drug
- oxygen therapy (portable or fixed oxygen container)
- chest drain (removes excess mucus)
- antibiotics to treat bacterial infections
what are other ways of reducing your symptoms of emphyema?
- getting regular exercise
- quitting smoking
- healthy weight and diet
- drinking more water to make the mucus thinner.
what is cystic fibrosis?
the movement of salt and water in and out of cells is effected resulting in A BUILD UP OF THICK, STICKY MUCUS IN THE BODIES TUBES.
what are the causes of cystic fibrosis?
it’s a genetic condition caused by a faulty gene.
what are the symptoms of cystic fibrosis?
coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath
