what does the liver do?
it carriers out more chemical processes that any other orang in the body.
what does the liver store?
- glucose
- vitamins
- minerals
liver process number 3: production of bile
- bile production by liver as a result of breakdown for RBC’s
- stored in gallbladder
- it emulsifies fat in the digestive processes.
what are the 3 main processes of the liver?
- deamination
- detoxification.
- production of bile
liver process number one: deamination
- the liver breaks down proteins
- ammonia is produced which gets converted into urea.
liver process number 2: detoxification
- liver converts ammonia to urea which is less toxic
- urea is transported in the blood -> kidney’s remove into urine
- it breaks down alcohol and removes it from the blood
- also breaks down drugs like paracetamol
what are the main symptoms of cirrhosis?
- nausea
- weight loss
- jaundice
what are the 3 possible causes for cirrhosis?
- alcohol misuse - regular binge drinking, drinking to quickly, long term regular exceeding of limits - 14 units each week.
- obesity - is a cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease - high fatty diet
- long term hepatitis C infection.
explain the biological explanation for cirrhosis from alcohol related problems?
cirrhosis is scarring of the liver from alcohol damage, scar tissue replaces healthy tissue.
explain the biological explanation for cirrhosis from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease related problems?
fat builds up in liver cells causing them to be inflamed. scars tissue builds up in the liver and surrounding blood vessels.
what are the care options for liver cirrhosis?
there’s no cure for it however:
1. you must manage your symptoms so less alcohol and consume less fatty foods.
2. if your liver fails then a transplant may be an option.
what are the cons to having a liver transplant?
- you need a donor
- making sure there’s no rejection from the donors liver.
