bone structure Flashcards
vertical structure - what is the periosteum?
hard outer layer
vertical structure - what is the compact bone?
provides strength, tightly stacked layers containing osteons (which looks like tree rings)
vertical structure - what is the spongy bone?
a porous, light weight with an irregular arrangements of tissue (trabeculae).
vertical structure - what is the epiphyseal line?
where bones grow and give us height.
vertical structure - what is the bone marrow?
red cell production, stem cells are found.
vertical structure - what is the cartilage?
covers the end of the bone to reduce wear and tear.
collagen and chondrin
in the womb our skeletons is made up of tough springy cartilage. after birth proteins called collagen and chondrin stay to make our skeleton a little bit elastic
osteoblasts
are bone building cells that deposit mineral salts such as calcium phosphate into our skeleton
osteocytes
after forming bone cells some osteoblasts become trapped forming osteocytes which monitor and maintain the bone as it forms and increases in size.
osteoclasts
are bone consuming cells that use enzymes to remove bone salts so they can be reabsorbed into the blood after physical activity. the constant process of removing and reabsorbing is called remodelling.
