nerve action. Flashcards
what are dendrites?
join onto synaptic end bulbs of next nerve cells.
what is an axon?
the longest part of the nerve cell.
what is the synaptic end bulb?
point where the nerve connects to other nerves and produces transmitted substance to pass the signals across the gap next nerve
what does the myelin sheath do?
insulates and speeds up nerve transmissions.
what is role of the nucleus & cell body
contains the instructions of the nerve cell
what is the node of Ranvier?
gaps in the myelin sheath.
what is the functions of the synapse
to transfer electrical activity for one nerve cell to another one.
functions of a synapse: what does the electrical signal travel along and what does this trigger to happen?
an axon & this then triggers the nerve-ending of a neuron to release chemical messengers.
functions of a synapse: what are these chemical messengers called?
neurotransmitter
functions of a synapse: what do these chemicals do?
they diffuse across the gap between the two nerves (synaptic cleft) and transmit a signal.
functions of a synapse: after the chemicals have passed the synaptic cleft what do they bind with?
they bind with receptors on the membrane of the next neuron to continue the electrical messenger.
functions of a synapse: what can block our neurotransmitter?
alcohol and anaesthetics.
what is a motor neuron?
carrying messages from the CNS to the muscles.
what is a sensory neuron?
carry’s messages from sense organs, such as pain receptors in the skin to the CNS.
what does the central nervous system include?
brain and spine
