buccal cavity
chops, turns and chews food which mixes with saliva enzymes
salivary glands
they release saliva and starts the digestive process. amaylees is digesting the sugar
epiglottis
the flap that stops food from going down the trachea
oesophagus
long tube that directs the food to your intestine, muscles push the food down (peristalsis)
stomach (muscular bag)
it churns food, containing acid and enzymes.
breaks solid food to a paste (chyme). breaks down proteins.
small intestine
major digestive and absorption of nutrients, the walls are lined with villi to help more food have their nutrients absorbed.
liver
produces bile (1. neutralises stomach acid. 2. breaks down fat)
pancreas
- regulates sugar with insulin
- produces enzymes (pancreas juices)
gallbladder
stores bile and releases it into the intestine
bile duct & pancreatic duct
carry the liquid from the pancreas to the small intestine.
large intestine
reabsorbs water from the waste from the small intestine
rectum
when it’s full it is sensed from the muscles causing the fibres to go to the next stage of poo
