Respiratory: Anatomy - Mediastinum Flashcards
What are the anatomical borders of the mediastinum?
Superior thoracic aperture to diaphragm inferiorly
Sternum and costal cartilages anteriorly to bodies of thoracic vertebrae posteriorly
How does the mediastinum change with age?
Connective tissue becomes more fibrous and rigid, so mediastinal structures become less mobile
Describe the mediastinal subdivisions
Superior
Inferior (with anterior, middle, and posterior parts)
Borders of superior mediastinum
Superior thoracic aperture to transverse thoracic plane
Define the transverse thoracic plane
Sternal angle anteriorly to junction (intervertebral disc) of T4 and T5 posteriorly
Borders of inferior mediastinum
Transverse thoracic plane to diaphragm
Borders of anterior mediastinum
Sternum to pericardium
What constitutes the middle mediastinum?
Pericardium and its contents (heart, great vessels)
Borders of posterior mediastinum
Pericardium and thoracic vertebral bodies
