Haematology: Pathology - Polycythaemia Flashcards
1
Q
Explain the difference between relative and absolute polycythaemia
A
Relative: increased RBC count due to haemoconcentration (e.g. in dehydration)
Absolute: increased total RBC mass
2
Q
What is the difference between primary and secondary absolute polycythaemia?
A
Primary: due to abnormalities of haematopoietic precursors
Secondary: in response to elevated EPO
3
Q
What is the most common cause of primary polycythaemia?
A
Polycythaemia vera
4
Q
Give four examples of high-EPO states which cause secondary polycythaemia
A
- Lung disease
- High-altitude living
- Cyanotic heart disease
- Paraneoplastic (RCC, HCC)
