Infectious diseases: Pharmacology - Other antimicrobials Flashcards
1
Q
Mechanism of action of chloramphenicol
A
Reversibly binds 50S subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis
2
Q
Chloramphenicol: bacteriostatic or bactericidal?
A
Bacteriostatic
3
Q
Coverage of chloramphenicol. What is notably NOT covered?
A
Broad-spectrum: aerobic and anaerobic Gram positives and negatives, Rickettsiae
Does not cover Chlamydiae
4
Q
Three types of toxicity observed with chloramphenicol use
A
- Dose-related suppression of erythropoiesis (reversible)
- Aplastic anaemia (irreversible, may be fatal)
- “Grey baby syndrome”: vomiting, flaccidity, hypothermia, shock
5
Q
How is chloramphenicol metabolised and excreted?
A
Hepatic metabolism
Renal excretion
