Infectious diseases: Pharmacology - Lincosamides Flashcards
1
Q
Two examples of lincosamides
A
Lincomycin
Clindamycin
2
Q
Mechanism of action of lincosamides
A
Reversibly binds ribosomal 50S subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis (at same site as erythromycin)
3
Q
Are lincosamides bacteriostatic or bactericidal?
A
Both: bactericidal at high concentrations
4
Q
Indications for clindamycin
A
Skin and soft tissue infections
Toxic shock syndrome*
Necrotising fasciitis*
Prophylaxis against endocarditis in those with valvular heart disease AND penicillin allergy undergoing dental procedures
- due to inhibition of GAS toxin production
