Infectious diseases: Pharmacology - Principles of antimicrobial action Flashcards
1
Q
6 mechanisms of antimicrobial action
A
- Lyse cell membrane
- Inactivate microbe
- Inhibit cell wall synthesis
- Inhibit microbial ribosome
- Inhibit enzymes required for nucleoside/DNA synthesis
- Inhibit machinery of viral replication
2
Q
Bacteriostatic vs bactericidal activity
A
Bacteriostatic: stops or slows bacterial growth, requires immune system to finish off microbes
Bactericidal: causes bacterial death
3
Q
Mechanisms of resistance
A
- Decreased penetration of antibiotic (e.g. biofilm)
- Increased efflux (via pumps)
- Alter site of action
- Develop enzyme to break down antibiotic
