Required practical: microscopes Flashcards
Objective lenses
Have difference magnifications to change the magnification of the image
Can switch them out
Eyepiece
Where you look through
Eyepiece lens
Inside the eyepiece
Has a Magnification of 10x
Step 1
Place the slide with sample onto stage
Clips into place
Step 2
Select lowest magnification objective lens
Step 3
Slowly turn coarse focussing dial to move the stage up closer to the lens until almost touching
Observing from the side not the eyepiece lens
Step 4
Look through the eyepiece
Adjust coarse focusing dial until it’s in focus by moving the stage away
Step 5
Use fine focussing dial to bring the cells into a clear focus
Step 6 (calculating total magnification)
Multiply the objective lens magnification
by the eyepiece magnification (usually 10)
Step 7
Place ruler on stage
View it through the eyepiece and measure diameter to find magnification scale
Stage
Where you place microscope slide
Has clips to hold slide in place
Lamp
Light from it passes up through slide
Mirror
Reflect light up through the slide
Coarse focusing dial
Moves stage closer to the objective lens
Light microscopes
Type that uses light to view cells
Smaller and more portable
