Maintaining body temperature Flashcards
What part of the brain monitors body temperature?
Hypothalamus
How does the hypothalamus monitor body temperature?
Because it contains receptors that are sensitive to blood temperature
But the skin also contains temperature receptors that send electrical impulses to this part of the brain
2 ways the body responds to increased heat temperature
Sweating
Vasodilation
Sweating
Sweat glands release sweat on skin surface
Which is evaporated off this cooling the body down
Vasolidation
Capillaries in skin surface widen
So more blood travels through
And so heat transfers out the blood out on the skin surface
3 ways the body cools down
Vasoconstriction
Shivering
Stop sweating
Vasoconstriction
Capillaries constrict and become more narrow
So less blood runs through
Therefore less what from the blood is transferred from the skin surface
Shivering
Skeletal muscles begin contracting
Which requires energy so the muscle cells begin respiring more
So heat released
Stop sweating
Electrical impulses sent to glands
So sweat isn’t released on surface of the skin
