Exchange Flashcards
What states of matter does diffusion take place in?
Solids and liquids
Diffusion
Movement of particles from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration. Uses no energy.
Concentration gradient
The difference between the concentration outside of the cell and inside of the cell
How does temperature affect diffusion?
The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy
More kinetic energy means particles will move more and diffuse quicker
Less time taken to diffuse
How does concentration gradient effect diffusion?
Higher concentration gradient means a bigger difference between the concentration inside and outside of the cell.
The higher this is, the quicker diffusion occurs
How does surface area affect diffusion?
The larger the surface area, the more particles can diffuse through at the same time
Increases rate of diffusion
Osmosis
Diffusion of water molecules from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration
Diffusion of water molecules from a dilute concentration (more water molecules) to a concentrated solution (less water molecules)
Uses no energy
Dilute solution
Contains a low concentration of solute but a high concentration of water
Concentrated solution
Contains a high concentration of a substance, but a low concentration of water
Active transport
Movement of dissolved particles from a LOW concentration to a high concentration. Requires energy.
Can dissolved substances move by active transport?
Yes, active transport is the transport of dissolved substances from a low to high concentration
What organ absorbs most products of digestion in humans?
Small intestine
Function of alveoli
Moves oxygen into lungs and carbon dioxide out via diffusion into the bloodstream
Function of blood vessels in the lungs
Provide the lungs with a good blood supply so diffusion can happen
What forms of exchange happens in the small intestine?
Active transport and diffusion
