Animal cells Flashcards
Adaptations of sperm cells
A tail to swim faster, lots of mitochondria to release energy for swimming, acrosome to digest cell membrane of egg cell
Adaptations of nerve cells
Long fibre (axon) to carry messages up and down the body over long distances, fatty sheath to insulate and speed up nerve impulses, branches to hook onto other nerve cells
Adaptations of muscle cells
Lots of mitochondria to release energy for contraction, protein fibres that can contract when energy is available
Adaptations of red blood cells
No nucleus so more room for haemoglobin, flexible disk shape to go through narrow areas
Adaptations of ciliated cells
Contains tiny hairs to remove mucus and trap pathogens
Stem cell
A cell in the body that has not yet been specialised for a purpose. Found in embryos and parts of the adult body such as bone marrow.
Differentiation in animal cells
Once differentiated can’t differentiate again into a different cell, embryo stem cells can become any specialised cell adult stem cells are limited
