The psychologist who proposed that the study of consciousness should be replaced by the study of behavior was A. John B Watson B. Abraham Maslow C. G Stanley Hall D. Sigmund Freud
A. John B Watson
An industrial designer wants to determine if the new design for a piece of office equipment will result in fewer errors. The designer sets up a machine wiht the old design in one room and a machine with the new design in a second room. He counts how many errors are made using each of the two machines. In this study, the number of errors that are made would be A. a control variable B. the dependent variable C. the independent variable D. an extraneous varable
A. a control variable
Frank received a questionnaire in the mail asking about his general buying habits. He was asked to identify the specific products that he typically buys and the amount of each product that he typically uses. If Frank completes the questionnaire and returns it, he will have taken part in research that incorporates A. the survey method B. naturalistic observation C. a case study approach D. archival research
A. the survey method
An in-depth examination of a single individual's behavior, which includes careful observation of their symptom progression and response to treatment, is called A. a psychological test B. a case study C. an experiment D. a survey
B. a case study

B. the scientific study of the unconscious
C. the scientific study of the brain
D. the scientific study of conscious experience
D. the scientific study of conscious experience
Explain the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable as used in the experimental method.
(1) The independent variable is the variable that is being manipulated. This variable is what affects the dependent variable.
(2) The dependent variable is the variable that is not manipulated in any way, but is the result of the manipulation of an independent varable.
Dr. Bob found a significant positive correlation of +.90 the number of college courses completed and level of happiness, and therefore concludes the enrolling in college leads to a happier life. Is Dr. Bob correct is his conclusion? Why or why not?
No, one of the stated rules when it comes to experiments the rule is “correlation does not equal causation”. There is a correlation between courses completed and level of happiness, meaning they happen together quite often together. Although there is not enough data to suggest that more college courses completed CAUSES happiness or vice-versa.
The main pathway visual signals travel from the eye to the visual cortex is
A. optice nerve- optic chiasm- thalamus- temporal lobe
B. optice nerve- optic chiasm- thalamus- occipital lobe
C. optice nerve- thalamus- optic chiasm- temporal lobe
D. optice nerve- thalamus- optic chiasm- occipital lobe
B. optice nerve- optic chiasm- thalamus- occipital lobe
Which research method allows researchers to MOST easily isolate the effect of both genetics and experience on specific traits? A. family studies B. twin studies C. adoption studies D. survey studies
C. adoption studies
Bradley is deeply relaxed and his muscles are not moving at all (ie at rest). Which option below best describes the distribution of charged ions in Bradley’s motor neurons?
A. sodium ions are concentrated inside the neurons and chloride ions are concentrated outside the neurons
B. sodium ions and potassium are both concentrated inside the neurons
C. sodium ions and potassium are both concentrated outside the neurons
D. sodium ions are concentrated outside the neurons and chloride ions are concentrated inside the neurons

Describe the trichromatic theory.
We perceive color by comapring the responses of three types of cones, each of which is sensitive to a different part of the range of visible wavelengths (eg. short, medium, or long)
Which sense can route information directly to the cortex, instead of passing through the thalamus first?
Our sense of smell can route information directly to the cortex, instead of passing through the thalamus first.
List and define the two characteristics of sound waves that correspond to loudness and pitch.
Amplitude and Frequency both contribute to sound waves. Amplitude, reflects how “high” a wave gets.
Frequency measures how many times a wave “loops” (repeadidly goes up and down).
Amplitude determines ther “loudness” while frequency determines the pitch.
