- -Helen is someone who enjoys life without thinking about the consequences of her action .

Although there a few occasions with brief hopes where Helen hopes that Jo won’t spoil herself , and follow through her footsteps . Delaney hgihglihgts the normalised standards of motherhood in the 1950s , of devoting yourself to your husband . As Helen asks Jo , “What sort of wife do you think you would make you are useless .She however , seeks stability . By Helen giving herself to Peter , Delaney is making a social comment about the distinction in views towards sex from both women and men. Men are allowed to be frivilous when it comes to sex but the women in the play have to pay for their taste of honey, they are punished for their sexual encounters whereas the men are free.

By act two – however , helen stars to show some real concern for pregnant JO ,m she is even willing ot taking her into Peter’s home , by doing this delnaye is emphasizing how being a single mother in the 1950s was fangerous , Until peter opposes this plan , and she is torn between the two and eventually , ends up leasving with Peter , as she does not want to end up again in , as Peter desdirbes it , @the gutter@ she was once in .

Helensis shocked whenthat Jo has become pregnant to a black man . Bugt instead of worrying about Jo , she worries about herself , “if can you see me wheeling a param with a …” By doing this , delaney hgihlights the ostracization of society , and amaybe the reason why ostracization even occurs in the first place .

Delaney presents to us Jo , having many teenage incsecurities and confusions , Jo always seems go be emotionalluy drained by her mother , sometimes despsising helen , but then longs to be with her and hates the attentions he gives ot peter , She hardly had any love for me .But in the end , jo is still a child craving affection and a motherly figure o helen .
