Love + Marriage How does Shelagh Delanely present it

A

delagney describes marriage as prision where we women re trapped , when Helen is trying to deter Jo from marriage , it is revealed tht there is an ideal type of wife in society “what sory of wife do ou think you make”, and once your married , you are devotg your life to your husband , She also suggests that arriage is not an ejoyben t but”Marriage cn be hell for a kid “

IN HELENS shoes , she is marrying Peter for practical reasons more than out of love . He can offer her financial stability “he spends his money like water” and therefore Helen must satisfy all his desires to be able to depend on him . Suggesting marriage is not always out of love .

23
Q

How does Delaney present women in the 1950s

A

Delaney presennt women in the 1950s as being objectfied and having an ‘expiry date’ , if you are gonna bo cme a wife , you have to fufill the exoectations of not only society , but oyur husband aas well .
This is further prreented when Helen talks about how being moral will not get you anywhere , although in religion she may be seen as a disgrace , Hellen suggetss that “Heaven must be a hell of a place “ “full of pimps prostitutes and politcians” showing a subversion of heaven hell and in the end it is what socioety believe not religion .

24
Q

How does Shelagh Delaney present death in taste of honey

A

Shelagh delaney presents darkness in the play by usrrounding the flat Helen and Jo live in surrounded by dark and death in a form of a slaughter hosu . Peter describes the place as “a black hole caluctta” which is reference to the dungeons where prisoners of britian were held . A black hole is full of darkness - something Jo is scared of of .
On the other hands , Helen is very realsitic about death ;”thats where we all end p sooner o later” and that we are all “drunk divers” suggestng that we have little control of our own lives .
