Psychopathology- Explaining&Treating Depression (Cognitive Approach) Flashcards
cognitive approach=
depression is due to irrational thoughts, resulting from maladaptive internal processes.
SCHEMA=
mental framework based on experience -allows us to quickly process sensory info and make auto assumptions and reponses
Beck’s negative triad?
The self: feeling unworthy
The world: thinking people are hostile or threatening
The future: thinking things will alwyas turn out bad
what is the BECK’S NEGATIVE TRIAD?
3 schemas w/ a persistent AUTO negative bias
Link beck’s negative triad to cognitive approach
-negative triad develops in childhood -but provides framework for persistent negative bias in adult-hood leading to cognitive DISTORTION
Overgeneralisation=
one negative experience could result in an assumption that the same thing will happen
Selective abstraction=
mentally filtering out the positive experiences and focusing on negative
ELLIE’S ABC MODEL
A= ACTIVATING EVENT-anything that happens to someone
B=BELIEF-for people w/o depression beliefs about A are rational and vice versa
C=CONSEQUENCE-rational beliefs lead to positive consequences, irrational lead to negative consequences
Mastubatory thinking
-consequence of not accepting we do not live in a perfect world
