Q

Why do most IV tubes have one-way valves in the middle of the line?

A

The one-way valves are there to prevent bolused medicines (such as those given through a stopcock or Y-port) from passing back up the line to the fluid bag.

If a line does not have a one-way valve then you need to clamp it to prevent backflow.

Q

With medicines that are in glass bottles, you need to have a ____________ in the line to allow fluid to flow.

A

vent

Many lines will have a vent in the spike that you can open, but if that’s not the case then use a large bore needle to puncture the bottle.

Q

What is unique about the valves of manifold ports?

A

Manifold ports have one-way valves in two directions so that fluid can only flow to the patient. A syringe can thus be left on the manifold with no concern that it will get backflushed with fluids or blood.
