Q

True or false: if you are working at a regional hospital and a trauma comes to your helipad to be flown to a different hospital, you must evaluate them to not trigger EMTALA.

A

It depends.

If EMS requests that you assess that patient then you do need to see the patient and do what you can. If they do not request that you see them then you do not need to assess them.

Q

If you suspect another physician has a substance problem, what are the general recommendations for reporting?

A
  • Do not approach the physician yourself. This should happen by professionals who can take the next steps.
  • Avoid things that may be punitive at first, such as calling the licensing board. This can inflame the situation before the physician has a chance to get help.
  • Report to the state physicians’ health board so they can investigate and care for the physician.
