What is pneumonia?
Inflammation of the bronchioles, alveoli, and lobes of the lungs
What are the causes of pneumonia?
- Virus
- Bacteria
- Parasite
- Chemical irritant
What is the most common causative agent of pneumonia?
Streptococcus pneumoniae
What is an example of a bacteria that causes pneumonia?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
How does pneumonia affect the pulmonary system?
Causative agent causes inflammatory exudates which fills the alveolar spaces (consolidation) and impairs gas exchange
What is the sound produced upon percussion?
Dullness
What are the two abnormal transmission of sounds cause by consolidation?
Egophony - e sounds like a
Bronchophony - ninety-nine becomes clear and loud
What is whispered pectoriloquy?
The quadrants are assessed while patient repeats 1,2,3 in a whisper
What is a common symptom of pneumonia?
Chest pain during cough
How is pneumonia diagnosed?
Xray, the bottom part of the lung has white indications
How do you determine if it is caused by a bacteria or a virus?
Increased white blood cells - bacteria
Decreased white blood cells - virus
