What causes low ADH in patients?
- Autoimmune disorder
- Removal of pituitary gland
What are the signs and symptoms of Fluid Volume Deficiency?
- hemoconcentration
- collapsed neck veins
- reduced central venous pressure
- xerostomia
- dry skin turgor
- sunken fontanelles & eyeballs
- SHOCK
What electrolyte imbalance does the patient manifest in Diabetes Insipidus?
Hypokalemia and Hypernatremia
What is the diagnostic test for Diabetes Insipidus?
Water deprivation test
- restrict fluids for 12 hours
What is the management of Diabetes Insipidus?
- Corticosteroids
- Weight monitoring
- Low salt high potassium diet (BOWS)
What causes high ADH in SIADH?
Small cell lung cancer or autoimmune condition
What are the signs and symptoms of Fluid Volume Excess?
- Congestion
- Congestive Heart Failure, Cardiac Tamponade
- Pulmonary Edema
- Cerebral Edema (risk for seizure) - hemodilution
- increased central venous pressure
- distended neck veins
- bulging fontanelle
- periorbital edema
- anasarca
What electrolyte imbalance is manifested in SIADH?
Dilutional hyponatremia
What is a risk for dilutional hyponatremia?
Altered level of consciousness and seizures
What antibiotic is given to patients with SIADH?
Demeclocycline
What are examples of potassium wasting diuretics?
Mannitol and Lasix
What is the management of SIADH?
- Low potassium high sodium diet
- Monitor intake and output
- Corticosteroids
- Monitor level of consciousness
What is the DOC for Diabetes Insipidus?
Vasopressin/Desmopressin given intranasally
