Plant Nutrition Flashcards
Name three parts of soil.
A horizon, B horizon, C horizon
A horizon
Decaying organic matter and broken down rock microbial organisms; called top soil or dirt; plants put most energy here
B horizon
Less weathered material
C Horizon
Rock, “parent meterial”; unbroken dirt (old rocks)
How is nutrients absorbed from soil into root hair?
Roots have CO2 to react w/ water which produces a H+ ion which then replaces the cations on the soil particle and the cations then are absorbed by root hair
Topsoil
Composed of humus or decaying plant matter and feces of decomposing organisms; contains a lot of bacteria; good for soil nutrient availability, water holding capacity and soil structure
What are plants nourished by?
Air b/c of carbon
Macronutrients
More than 0.1% of total plant mass; in large quantities; include C, O, H, N, P, S, K, Ca, Mg
Micronutrients
Less than 0.1% of plant mass; in small quantities; include Cl, Fe, Mn, B, Zn, Cu, Ni, Mo and sometimes Na
How were essential elements needed by plants were determined?
Hydroponic techniques
Nitrogen fixers
Convert N2 gas to ammonia for plants and some form structures in roots
Mycorrhizal fungi
Form hyph networks that crease surface area and nutrient uptake; receives C from plands
What are the two types of mycorrhizae?
Ectomycorrhizae and Arbuscular mycorrhizae
Ectomycorrhizae
Form sheath around root; abt 10% of plant families have these
Arbuscular mycorrhizae
Fungal hyphae extend into roots and are in lost plants
