plant adaptations Flashcards
1
Q
how are hydrophytes adapted to their environment
A
stomata only on upper surface of leaf to allow for diffusion of gasses as if it was on the lower surface of the leaf the stomata would be submerged
air spaces for flotation (bouyancy)
leaves have large surface area to float
submerged leaves are divided to provide large surface area for photosynthesis
2
Q
how are xerophytes adapted to their function
A
thick waxy cuticle to cut down water loss (reduces evaporation rate and reflects the heat to lower the temp)
sunken stomata further reduces water loss by evaporation
small leaves to reduce surface area and evaporating surface
shallow roots to allow for fast absorption of water
