enzymes Flashcards
what is an enzyme
a protein that increases the rate of a chemical reaction and is not changed by the reaction.
enzymes are known as a biological catalyst
how do enzymes work
When enzymes find their designated substrate, they lock on and transform them, and then continue to the next substrate molecule.
enzymes and temprature
an increase in temp increases the enzymatic activity
a decrease in temp decreases the enzymatic activity
if temp goes above 50 degrees then enzyme will denature
enzymes and pH
enzymes work best at a certain level of acidity or alkalinity
what is the temp/pH that an enzyme works best at known as
optimum pH or optimum temp
what is stomach protease pepsin’s optimum pH
pH 2 (acidic)
what is the optimum pH for pancreatic lipase
pH 8 (basic/alkaline)
what is salivary amylase optimum pH
pH 6.8 (alkaline/basic)
what is pancreatic protease trypsin’s optimum pH
7.5/8 (alkaline/basic)
what is a substrate
The substance on which an enzyme acts is called its substrate
what is a product
molecules produced after an enzyme binds to a substrate
what is an active site
a region of an enzyme specific to its substrate in which it binds to the substrate
what is a temperature that will denature enzymes found in the body
above 37 degrees (above body temperature)
what are the 2 things that can denature a protien
temp
pH
