p4 mistake deck Flashcards
role of estrogen in the menstrual cycle
helps build uterine lining
inhibits fsh secretion
stimulates LH secretion
what is nitrification
decomposition of animals releases ammonia ions into soil
ammonia ions conversion to nitrate and nitrite ions is nitrification
what is nitrogen fixation
lightning at high temperatures makes nitrogen in the air and oxygen in the air react to form nitrate ions, these are dissolved in the clouds and then enter the soil through rain
root nodules in leguminous plants have rhizobium bacteria which are nitrogen-fixating bacteria
how does nitrogen trapped in animals’ body pass into the soil
when they die the decomposers help break down the various compounds containing nitrogen and hence releases the nitrogen back into the soil
how does nitrogen released through activity of decomposers get back into the atmosphere
denitrifying bacteria convert nitrate (nitrogen ions) to molecular nitrogen and release this back into the atmosphere in anaerobic conditions
outline how the body removes an oxygen debt
breathing rate and heart rate are high to provide oxygen, this oxygen is used to break down lactic acid by aerobic respiration and is broken down to form carbon dioxide and water lactic acid is broken down in teh liver
how are pallisade cells adapted to maximise photosynthesis
tightly packed
many chloroplasts for maximum trapping of light energy
cells positioned at the top of the leaf
vacuole ensures chloroplasts are at the edge of the cells
what does amylase break down starch to
maltose
