Physiology 2 Flashcards
What are the two equasions to do with lung capactiy
Respiritory minute volume = tidal volume (streangth) * respiritory rate (frequency)
Alveolar ventelation = (tidal volume - dead space) * respiritory rate
What is dead volume
Dead volume = air left in the conduciton zone -> never participates in gas exchange
What is daltons law
The pressure of air = the sum of the partial pressures of components
How does the pressure of gas change throughout breath
Nitrogen = no change
O2 = high atm = lower in alveolar = slightly higher when breathed out
CO2 = low atm = high in alveolar = slightly lower when breathed out
H2O = low atm = high alveolar + breathed out
What are the three factors impacting diffusion at respiritory membranes
surface area
thickness of walls
pressure difference (alveolar -> capillary)
How does surface area affect gas exchange
alveolar bulbous shape = high SA = good gas exchnage
emphysema = dilation + destruction of alveolar walls = lower SA
How does wall thickness affect gas exchange
Thinner wall = easier diffusion
blood air barrier = thin = easy diffusion
pulmonary fibrosis = thickened walls = harder diffusion
How does pressure difference effect gas exchange
Bigger difference = better exchange
variable differe
