Blood functions Flashcards

1
Q

what are the tree main functions of blood

A

transport
- o2, water, nutriance
- co2 waste
- pH regulators
- heat
- hormones
- WBC
immunity - stop infection uses WBC
coagulation - prevents blood clotting uses platelets + coagulation factors

formed elements - WBC RBC(majority) platelets

plasma- water majority + solutes (ions, nutriance)

Q

what is a red blood stemcell and how does it function

A

hemocytoblasts = very undifferentiated in red bone marrow
can differentitate to give any product - WBC, RBC or platelets
in the process of hematopoisis

Q

what are RBCs and define the shape + properties of this shape

A

erythrocytes = RBC
biconcave disk = maximises SA: volume
- increased diffusion of gasses
- flexably move through capilarrys
- high in hemoglobin

Q

what is hematocrit + condition + fact

A

hematocrit is the proprtion of blood which is RBC
- slightly higher in men due to increased testosterone
- anemic= low hematocrit - low o2 capacity
polycynthemia = high hemato crit - stresses system hard to push blood

Q

what is erythropoesis and how is it stimulated

A

erythropoiesis is the formation on rbc from hemocytoblasts which is stimulated by erythropoietin
- process requires irom for heme units

Q

how is short and long term o2 deficencys remidied by the body

A

short = increased heart rate + increased respiritory rate + deeper breathing
long = kidneys detect low blood o2, stimulates erythropoetin release, increases erythropoisis -> increased hematocrit

Q

what is blood doping

A

using artificial erythropoietin to increases hematocrit so you can carry mor o2 -> better performanse
