Pharmacology - Intro Flashcards
__________is the study of how drugs affect living organisms.
Pharmacology
What can drugs be used for?
treat, prevent or diagnose disease
All drugs in general use rely on three terms:
Brand, Generic, Chemical
_________pertains to a chemical formed in a laboratory or factory rather than in a living system.
Synthetic Drugs
What is Prophylaxis?
The prevention of a disease
_________Is the study of the interaction of drugs with their sites of action
Pharmacodynamics
_______describes how the body moves and affects a specific chemical (or drug) so that the drug can have a pharmacodynamic response
Pharmacokinetics
Pharmacokinetics consists of four components:
Absorption
Distribution
Metabolism
Excretion
What is a destructive agent?
Destroys bacteria etc…. example: Antiseptic killing bacteria
__________are the diseases, symptoms, and conditions in which the drug will not be beneficial and may indeed do harm.
contradictions
_________are the diseases, symptoms, and conditions for which the drug is known to be beneficial.
indications
What is addition?
This is the combined effect of two drugs…. 1 + 1 = 2
What is antagonism?
The action of one drug negates the action of the second drug… 1 +1 = 0
What is potentiate?
An effect that occurs when a drug increase or prolongs the action of another drug, and the total effect is greater than the sum of each drug used alone….. a + b = B
What is synergism?
The joint action of drugs in which their combined effect is more intense or longer in duration then the sum of their individual effects. ….. 1 + 1 = 5
What are the three main routes of administration?
oral
parenteral
topical
What are the different ways parenteral drugs can be given?
Intramuscular (IM) Intrarterial (IA) Intracardiac (IC) Intrathecal (IT) Intrasynovial (IS) Subcutaneous (SC) Intravenous (IV)
What are the different topical routes?
Transdermal Conjunctival Intraoccular Intranasal Aural Rectal Vaginally Inhaled
What are the last two factors to affect the decision for the route of administration?
Toxicity
Metabolism by the liver
The degree to which a drug is chemically altered as it circulates through the liver for the first time is called the _________
First Pass Effect
What is RFA?
Reason for Assessment
What is HPI?
History of Present Illness
What does SCHOLAR-E stand for?
Symptoms Characteristics History Onset Location Aggravating Factors Remitting Factors Explanatory Model
What is PMH?
Past Medical History
What is Med Hx
Medication History
