Pesonality Flashcards
What are the three theories of personality?
Trait theory, social learning theory, and the interactionist theory
What is trait theory?
The idea that we are born with innate characteristics (e.g. extroverted people will always be extroverted).
What is the social learning theory?
The idea that behaviour is learned from significant others (which is socialisation).
What is the definition of socialisation?
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others.
What are the two types of socialisation?
• Primary socialisation (family)
• Secondary socialisation (schools, media etc.)
What is vicarious learning?
It is when a person is motivated to learn something by watching someone else work and be rewarded
What is the process of learning simplified to?
Observe -> Identify -> Reinforced -> Copy
What does B = f(PxE) mean?
Behaviour is a function of personality and environment.
What are the three features of the Hollander approach to the interactionist theory?
• The core of the performer (values and beliefs)
• Typical responses (inherent traits displayed)
• Role related behaviour (a performer may adapt or adopt a very specified role)
What is the credulous approach?
Believing the theories of personality. Accepting a link that personality can predict behaviour.
What is the sceptical approach?
Not believing the theories of personality. Doubtful that personality can predict behaviour.
