What is motivation?
The drive to succeed.
What is intrinsic motivation?
Motivation from within, the satisfaction of successfully completing a task, pride, self-satisfaction.
What is extrinsic motivation?
Motivation from an outside source e.g. praise.
What is tangible motivation?
Motivation from a physical object e.g. trophies.,
What is intangible motivation?
Motivation from a non-physical source e.g. praise or concern.
What are the pros and cons of extrinsic motivation?
• Attract to the activity
• Provide early motivation
• If used too much, may undermine the value of the activity
• May create pressure on players to achieve
• Motivation can be lost if players aren’t rewarded
What are the pros and cons of intrinsic motivation?
• More effective
• Stronger
• Longer-lasting
• Give more satisfaction and pride
• Not easy for beginners to be self-motivated
Describe some motivation methods.
• Rewards
• Praise
• Making the task enjoyable
• Making sure the performer can succeed
• Negative reinforcement (for experts)
• Setting attainable goals
• Pointing out role models
• Breaking tasks down
• Attributing success internally
