Neuromuscular System Flashcards
1
Q
What is isometric contraction?
A
When there is tension in a muscle but no visible movement.
2
Q
What is autogenic inhibition?
A
When there is a sudden relaxation of the muscle in response to high tension. The receptors involved in this process are golgi tendon organs.
3
Q
What are muscle spindles?
A
Very sensitive proprioceptors that lie between skeletal muscle fibres. They provide information (excitory signals) to the central nervous system about how fast and far a muscle is being stretched.
4
Q
What are golgi tendon organs?
A
Proprioceptors found between the muscle fibre and tendon. They detect levels of tension in a muscle.
5
Q
What does PNF stand for?
A
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
