Aggression Flashcards
What is the definition of aggression?
Intent to harm outside the rules; hostile behaviour.
What is the definition of assertion?
Well-motivated behaviour within the rules.
What are the four theories of aggression?
ASIF:
• Aggressive-cue hypothesis
• Social learning theory
• Instinct theory
• Frustration-aggression hypothesis
What is the aggressive cue hypothesis?
The theory that suggests that aggression is caused by a learned trigger. Aggression only occurs if learned ‘cues’ are present.
What is the social learning theory?
The theory that suggests aggression is learned from experience, coaches, role models and significant others. Aggressive behaviour will be copied if reinforced (observe, identify, reinforce, copy)
What is the instinct theory?
The theory that suggests aggression is innate, and is a product of our evolution. It says that aggression is spontaneous.
What is the frustration-aggression hypothesis?
The theory that suggests that aggression is inevitable when frustrating circumstances cause our goals to be blocked (drive -> obstacle -> frustration -> inevitable aggression -> [success -> catharsis] or [punishment -> more aggression] )
