Peritoneal cavity Flashcards
Peritoneum
Thin, transparent, semi permeable serous membrane
Lines the walls of the abdomeno-pelvic cavity and organs
Peritoneal cavity
Contains a small amount of lubricating fluid
foreign bodies etc in the peritoneal cavity cause peritonitis
Intraperitoneal organs
Almost completely covered with visceral peritoneum
Can’t move much
Retroperitoneal organs
Only contain visceral peritoneum on their anterior surface
Located near the back
Mobile
Intraperitoneal organs examples
Liver GB Spleen 1st part duodenum jejunum ileum transverse colon sigmoid colon
Retroperitoneal organs examples
Pancreas Kidneys 2nd, 3rd, 4th part duodenum Ascending colon Descending colon AA IVC
Organs with a mesentery
Covered in visceral peritoneum (intraperitoneal)
Visceral peritoneum wraps behind the organ and forms a double layer (mesentery)
Mesentery suspends the organ from the posterior wall
Very mobile
Organs with a mesentery examples
SI
Transverse colon
Sigmoid colon
Ommentum
Double layer of peritoneum which passes from the stomach and drapes over the intestines
Useful to wall off infection and prevent further spreading
Greater ommentum
4 layered
Hangs like an oaty apron
Attaches the greater curvature of the stomach to the transverse colon
Lesser ommentum
Double layered
Has a free edge
Runs between the lesser curvature of the stomach to the liver
Inferior aspects of the peritoneum (pouches)
Male
- rectovesical pouch
Female
- vesicouterine pouch
- rectouterine pouch
Hepatorenal recess
Part of the greater sac
