Nerves of the abdomen Flashcards
Sympathetic nerves
Travel from CNS -> abdominal organs
Leave SC between T5-L2
Enter sympathetic chains bilaterally
Leave sympathetic chains with abdominopelvic splanchnic nerves
Synapse at prevertebral ganglia (at coeliac, SMA or IMA)
Post synaptic fibres pass from prevertebral ganglia surface of arterial branches leaving the AA
Hitch a ride towards smooth muscle and glands of organs
At which level do abdominal sympathetic nerves leave the SC
T5-L2
Parasympathetic nerves
Travel from CNS -> abdominal organs
At which level to abdominal parasympathetic nerves leave the SC
Cranio-Sacral outflow
Cranial outflow - CNX
Sacral outflow - S2,3,4
Parasympathetic nerves (CNX)
Supplies fibres to GI tract up until the distal end of transverse colon
Presynaptic fibres enter abdo cavity on surface of oesophagus
The fibres travel into periarterial plexuses
Carried to walls of organs and synapse in ganglia
Parasympathetic nerves (S2,3,4)
Supply descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, anal canal
Pelvic splanchnic nerves
Abdominal body wall nerves
Conveyed within thoracoabdominal nerves
7th -> 11th intercostal nerves
