What is PID?
A
- infection/ inflammation of uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and the surrounding peritoneum
- usually due to ascending infection from the endocervix.

A
Chlamydia
gonorrhoeae
Mycoplasma

Features of PID
A
lower abdominal pain
fever
dyspareunia
dysuria
menstrual irregularities
discharge

Investigation of PID
A
- exclude ectopic pregnancy
- high vaginal swab
- screen for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea

Management of PID
A
oral ofloxacin
+ oral metronidazole
OR
IM ceftriaxone
+ oral doxycycline
+ oral metronidazole
Consider removal of IUD

Complications of PID
A
- Perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome)
- infertility
- chronic pelvic pain
- ectopic pregnancy

Should you treat for PID even if swabs are negative?
A
Yes
difficult to diagnose and complications are severe
