What percentage of the population have been exposed to CMV?
50%
(only causes disease in immunocompromised)
Typical cell appearance in CMV
‘Owl’s eye’
- intranuclear inclusion bodies
Describe the clinical features of Congenital CMV
- growth retardation
- pinpoint petechial ‘blueberry muffin’ skin lesions
- microcephaly
- sensorineural deafness
- encephalitiis (seizures)
- hepatosplenomegaly
Describe the clinical features of CMV mononucleosis
- infectious mononucelosis-like illness
- may develop in non-immunosuppressed individuals
Who normally develops CMV retinitis
HIV patients with a low CD4 count (< 50)
IV ganciclovir is the treatment of choice
Presenting complaint in CMV retinitis
visual impairment e.g. ‘blurred vision’.
Fundoscopy shows:
- retinal haemorrhages and necrosis
- ‘pizza’ retina

IV ganciclovir
Other organs where CMV may manifest
CMV encephalopathy
(HIV pts with low CD4 counts)
CMV pneumonitis
