(Gm +ve bacilli)

Pathophysiology of diphtheria
A
releases exotoxin
this kills mucosal cells
these then form ‘diphtheric membrane’ on tonsils
Systemic distribution may produce necrosis of myocardial, neural and renal cells

- bacterial throat swab for culture
(uses tellurite agar or Loeffler’s media)
