Pathology of Brain Tumours Flashcards
What is cerebral perfusion pressure?
Mean arterial pressure - intracranial pressure
What are the causes of raised ICP?
Inflammation (meningitis, encephalitis, abscess)
Vascular (haemorrhage, swelling)
Tumours
Hydrocephalus
What are the effects of intracranial space occupying lesions?
Amount of tissue increases
Raises ICP
Herniation between spaces
What pathology can explain the Glasgow coma scale?
Squeeze on cortex and brainstem
What pathology can explain pupillary dilatation?
Squeeze and stretch on cranial nerve 3
What pathology explains localising signs?
Squeeze on decussation of corticospinal tracts and posterior columns
What is ischaemic penumbra?
Tumours squeeze tissue and cause local ischaemia
