Pathology- Endocrine Flashcards
Name the 7 hormones from the anterior pituitary gland
Growth Hormone (GH)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Follicle stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Prolactin
Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH)
What are the two hormones associated with the posterior pituitary gland?
Oxytocin
ADH & Vasopressin
Increased: Gigantism (child): Acromegaly (adult)
Decreased: Dwarfism
GH
Increased: Hyperthyroidism aka GRAVES’
Decreased: Adult: Myxedema Child: Cretinism (hypothyroidism)
TSH
Increased: CUSHING’S
Decreased: Addison’s
ACTH
Decreased: Rare Fertile Eunuch Syndrome
LH
Increased: Caused by pregnancy
Decreased: Very rare, leads to failure to lactate
Prolactin
Increased: Darker skin color
Decreased: Albino/lighter skin color
MSH
Characterized by weight loss, insomnia, tachycardia, goiter, nervousness & hypertension
Grave’s Disease aka Hyperthyroidism
Characterized by a moon face appearnce, hirsutism, purple striase, weight gain, hypertension & a buffalo hump
Cushing’s disease aka hyperadrenalism
Signs of this are bronze skin and hypotension
Addison’s disease aka hypoadrenalism
in this condition the pancreas is afected, they have insulin deficiency, and have the three P’s
Diabetes Mellitus
In this condition the pituitary gland is not producing the correct hormone levels, the patient has ADH deficiency, and the patient has increased thirst and urination
Diabetes Insipidus
What are the 3 P’s?
Polydipsia- Increased Thirst
Polyuria- Increased Urination
Polyphagia- Excessive hunger
