parts of the ear Flashcards
1
Q
middle ear
A
chamber between eardrum, contains
2
Q
eardrum
A
tightly held membrane that vibrates with soundwaves
3
Q
inner ear
A
furthest part, contains cochlea, semicircular canals, and vestibular sacs
4
Q
cochlea
A
bony, fluid-filled coil that contains the oval window and basilar membrane. membrane vibrates fluid that fills the tube and stimulates tiny lining hair cells to transfer signal
5
Q
bones of the middle ear
A
hammer, anvil, stirrup
6
Q
How do sound waves enter your ear? (list the order of parts of the ear)
A
- Outer ear (the shaped part you can see) channels sound into the auditory canal
- Sound waves vibrate ear drum
- hammer, anvil, and stirrup amplify and send vibrations thru oval window of cochlea
- cochlea receives vibrations, jostled fluid inside
- Basilar membrane moves and hair cells shake
- hair cells cause nerves underneath to fire
- axon of nerves = auditory nerve
- thalamus receives and relays to auditory cortex
7
Q
semicircular canals and vestibular sacs
A
responsible for sensing movement in fluids and therefore balance/position of individual
