cochlea

A

bony, fluid-filled coil that contains the oval window and basilar membrane. membrane vibrates fluid that fills the tube and stimulates tiny lining hair cells to transfer signal

Q

How do sound waves enter your ear? (list the order of parts of the ear)

A
  1. Outer ear (the shaped part you can see) channels sound into the auditory canal
  2. Sound waves vibrate ear drum
  3. hammer, anvil, and stirrup amplify and send vibrations thru oval window of cochlea
  4. cochlea receives vibrations, jostled fluid inside
  5. Basilar membrane moves and hair cells shake
  6. hair cells cause nerves underneath to fire
  7. axon of nerves = auditory nerve
  8. thalamus receives and relays to auditory cortex
