mod 23 - studying and building memory Flashcards
memory
knowledge persisting over time due to effective storage and retrieval of info
Atkinson and Shiffrin’s
(3 stages of processing memory)
- encoding - process memory into system
- storage - retaining that encoded info overt ime
- retrieval - getting info out of that memory
flasbulb memory
clear memory of emotionally significant moment/event (i knew where I was during 9/11)
prospective memory (AP TERM)
knowing you will have to do smth in the future
what is the magic number of memory?
7
sensory memory
immediate recording of sense info to memory system (step 1 of encoding)
working memory
focuses more on processing of briefly stored memory(held in brain and you dont have to think about it, you just kind of know without referencing anything (directionson a goofy test))
self reference effect/ self referential processing
memory advantage if you can link info to yu personlly
short-term memory
activated memory which briefly holds stuff (clive wearing)
long-term memory
relatively permanent and limitless (2.5 petabytes!) database of memory system
order of memory using external events, sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-termmemory
external event ——LOTS OF INFO—> sensory memory —–not as much info——> short-term <—-> long-term (the double arrow = long-term memory is retrieved)
