Name the Five Principles
- Discuss Intellectual Property Frankly
- Be cautious around multiple roles
- ALWAYS maintain informed-consent
- Always maintain confidentiality
- Use resources for support in ethical dilemmas
Summarize the 1st principle
- Discuss intellectual property frankly
a. Don’t expect/give AUTHORSHIP from a contribution, but there should always be some form of credit for ANY available contribution
b. Talk abt who will get what credit at the beginning of and throughout an experiment
c. We often think our contributions are more than they are, but position and anything short of actually doing/heavily partaking in the thing do not warrant credit
d. DO NOT TAKE IDEAS FROM CONFIDENTIAL/UNPUBLISHED RESEARCH, or even informal convos w/o credit (and confidentiality if research is unpublished
e. Store important data for 5 years to answer questions and investigate ethical dilemmas
f. ALWAYS RELEASE INFO TO THOSE WHO WANT TO VERIFY CONCLUSIONS (except patient confidentiality)
g. Only use this released date for reanalysis if w/o written agreement
h. If errors that change interpretation are discovered, retract, correct etc.
Name 2nd principle
Caution around multiple roles
- Do not be the only person doing the work (compartmentalize) and
- Avoid conflict of interests with patients connected to some part of study
- Do not abuse power as the one in the higher position of these students in a mentorship, research lead, and professor role
3rd principle
- INFORMED CONSENT
- INFORM PATIENTS OF EVERYTHING INCLUDING RIGHT TO DECLINE
- Do not skip informing process
4th principle
CONFIDENTIALITY/PRIVACY
- encode data, make sure you or someone working with u is web-savvy
- Inform patients of data use and of limit of their privacy
- Be careful to choose participants who will not limit the information they are willing to give
