Q

define and describe the stages of sleep:

A

NREM-1: drifting on the edge of consciousness, hallucinations and stuff
NREM-2: sleep spindles occur and minor noises will not disrupt you, starting to sleep
NREM-3: breathing and pulse slow down, slow delta waves pop up, deep sleep
REM: increased eye movement, loss of muscle control, dreaming

Q

list and define the waves of the brain:

A

alpha: (a for awake!) slow, relaxed, awake brain waves

delta (d for deep sleep): large, slow waves of sleep

hallucinations: false senses

Q

List the functions of sleep

A
  1. protection: served to protect our ancestors from predators (giraffes sleep 2 hours!)
  2. Recuperation: restores body tissues in brain, neuron repair, works on brain connections
  3. restores memories by repairing, reorganizing, and consolidating
  4. Feeds creativity, brain has down time and still thinks to help solve complex problems
  5. growth process: pituitary gland growth hormone active in sleep

what is insomnia? what should you NOT do to fix it?

define narcolepsy

A

uncontrollable fits of passing out into sleep (usually lasts less than 5 mins)

Q

what are rem dreams?

A

hallucinations

17
Q

what are some proposed reasons that we dream?

A
  1. freud/wish fulfillment
  2. information processing (helps sift and sort out days learning/experience)
  3. physiological function, periodic brain stimulation to preserve pathways
  4. neural activation: making sense of random static activity/stimuli
  5. cognitive maturation/development and turning experience from slideshows to stories
18
Q

what is REM rebound?

A

REM sleep increases following REM deprivation

19
Q

Define activation-synthesis theory

A

neural activity in sleep is random, dreams are the brains way of making sense of it alll (but dreams mean nothing)

20
Q

true/false: the limbic system is active during sleep

A

true
