mod 8: sleep and dreams Flashcards
What are some of the rhythms we all share?
annual cycles, 28 day menstrual cycles, 24 hour day cycles, 65-90 minut sleep cycles
what is the circadian rhythm?
the bodys biological rhythm which regulates other rhythms, wakefulness, body temp, etc. all on a 24 hour clock
define and describe the stages of sleep:
NREM-1: drifting on the edge of consciousness, hallucinations and stuff
NREM-2: sleep spindles occur and minor noises will not disrupt you, starting to sleep
NREM-3: breathing and pulse slow down, slow delta waves pop up, deep sleep
REM: increased eye movement, loss of muscle control, dreaming
time spent per stage of sleep:
1: 5-10 minutes
2: 10-25 minutes
3: 20-40 minutes
REM: 10-60 minutes
list and define the waves of the brain:
alpha: (a for awake!) slow, relaxed, awake brain waves
delta (d for deep sleep): large, slow waves of sleep
hallucinations: false senses
List the functions of sleep
- protection: served to protect our ancestors from predators (giraffes sleep 2 hours!)
- Recuperation: restores body tissues in brain, neuron repair, works on brain connections
- restores memories by repairing, reorganizing, and consolidating
- Feeds creativity, brain has down time and still thinks to help solve complex problems
- growth process: pituitary gland growth hormone active in sleep
true/false: larger animals cannot afford to sleep as long
true, as they are at greater threat of being found and preyed upon
which function of sleep is the only scientifically provable one? what part of the brain does it?
growth process, growth hormone released by pituitary gland
effects of sleep loss
fatigue, lowered concentration, depressed immune system, more vulnerability to accidents
what is insomnia? what should you NOT do to fix it?
chronic issues falling or staying asleep, do not take quick pills/alcohol, just aggravates and can reduce sleep
define narcolepsy
uncontrollable fits of passing out into sleep (usually lasts less than 5 mins)
1/2000 americans suffer from it
sleep apnea
altered/impacted breathing patterns during sleep, momentary reawakening, deprives slow wave sleep (1/20 americans)
define night terrors
withing first 2/3 hours of sleep, usually during rem, person appears terrified and screams but doesnt rmr
freuds contribution
we dream bcz wish fulfillment/discharge of otherwise unacceptable fulfillment
what proportion of dreams rmr’ed are negative?
8/10
