can help to change how you think , and what you do (behaviour) these changes can help you to improve quality of life. it focuses on the here and now problems and difficulties
instead of focussing on the causes it deals with ways to improve your state of mind now
what is the aim of ost ad westlings research?
to compare CBT with applied relaxation as therapist for panic disorder
treating panic disorders
what was the method used for this study?
longitudinal
what was the design ?
independent with patients being randomly assigned to applied relaxation or CBT
who were the participants ?
38 patients with DSM diagnosis of panic disorders recruited via referrals from psychiatrists and newspaper ads
variety of occupations and relationship status
what was the first part of the procedure?
pre- treatment baseline assessments of panic attacks using questionnaires such as
the panic attack sale, agoraphobic cognitions questionnaire
how many weeks of treatment were p/s given?
12 weeks (50-60 minutes)
what did participants have to record ?
details of every panic attack in a diary
given homework to carry out between each appointment
what was applied relaxation used for ?
used to identify what caused panic attacks
then training started with tension release of muscles, this was gradually increased until patients were able to use their techniques in stressful situations
what was CBT used for ?
used to first identify the misinterpretation of physical symptoms , then to generate an alternative cognition e.g more rational explanations
this was then practised in stressful situations, so the p/s had to accept the thoughts as right
what then happened after treatments ??
patients were reassessed on questionnaires
then follow up questionnaire a year later
what were the findings for CBT?
74% panic free patients after trement and 89% after a year
what were the findings for applied relaxation?
65% panic free after treatment
82% after a year
what other symptoms were reduced ?
depression and generalised anxiety
