24 sexual assaults
how did the assaults vary?
the first were rapes
they then escalated in violence becoming vicious
what was the age range of the women?
15-32
what was the trigger to the investigation?
police were becoming baffled by the cases and started to accumulate large amounts of evidence so decided to move the investigation on and to use more scientific methods
what was the first two assumptions made by canter?
that the attacks involving two people and one person would give them clues
that peoples behaviour changes over time and looking at changes would provide clues ( the crimes became more subtle and sophisticated over time)
what two social psychology factors did canter look into?
the type of relationships the attacker tried to form with the victim may reflect his relationship with others (the rapist asked questions showing consideration)
and the degree of dominance will show clues (only showed enough strength to rape , not a powerful individual)
what types of characteristics did canter put in john Duffys profile?
lived in the area close to the first crime lives with a women mid-late 20s right handed skilled- semi- skilled work with weekend work physically small knowledge of railways few friends
what is the actual characteristics of offenders ?
aged late 20s recently separated from wife lived in area raped wife at knife point travelling carpenter only two male friends
what happened after the profile was created ?
canter was able to use it and ran the profile through the police data base , john Duffy was an instant match , he was then arrested at his mothers were enough forensic evidence was gathered to prosecute him
what does this research prove?
that eyewitness testimony is not accurate as victims were good at describing the attack but not the attacker
what is an evaluation of this research?
this study is not very reliable given case was unusual and happened over period of time giving cantel time to gather evidence (most cases this does not occur)
method not generalizable , as we don’t know if it would work for other crimes e.g. theft only occurs once cannot gather as much evidence or pattern
