to see if perceived control or actual control can reduce stress reactions to averse stimuli

who were the participants?
60 undergraduate of a psychology course in new York
what design was used ?
independent , randomly assigned to a condition
what happened in group 1?
given control over how long they looked at the images for, could press button to terminate the image , tone would precede a new image
what happened in group 2?
were warned the photos would be 60 seconds apart they would see the image for 35 seconds and a 10 second warning code would precede each photo (no control but knew what was happening)
what happened in group 3 ?
told from time to time they would see photos and hear tones but not given timings or control
what procedure was used ?
each p/s were seated in a sound proof room and wired up to GSR and ECG machines
a baseline measurement was taken
instructions were read over an intercom
preceds 10 seconds
image of car crash victim showed for 35 seconds
GSR was taken at onset of tone and during the second half of the tone
what results were given ?
Group 2 showed most distress and group 1 showed least
ECG recordings were discarded as they appeared inaccurate
what is the conclusion for this research ?
that having control over your environment can reduce stress responses
