what does friendship look into ?

what is cognitive behavioural therapy ?
a type of therapy designed to replace faulty thinking patterns with better alternatives (involves role play and practising new cognitions in order to change behaviour)
what is the reasoning and rehabilitation programmes ?
the main principle is that cognition plays a vital part in criminal behaviour , defects cause offending behaviour. they lack c/s as they have not been taught the yet this is caused by problems in their social environment
due to lack of social skills offenders lack self- control and critical reasoning
what does the cognitive model propose ?
these thinking skills will enable offenders to be better motivated to withstand personal, situational, economic and interpersonal pressure towards illegal behaviour

teach offenders how to think enable them to move out of an offending lifestyle
includes role playing, thinking games, learning exercises , dilemma puzzles and problems

what was the sample ?
670 adult male offenders serving a sentence of 2 years or more and voluntarily participated in one or two cognitive skills programmes run by hm prison services
what was the method ?
the programme used was the cognitive skills programme and consists of 2 multi model programmes focusing on correcting maladaptive or faulty thinking patterns which have been linked with offending behaviour
reconviction rates were compared to a group of 1801 male offenders who had participated in any programme
what were the programmes ?
reasoning and rehabilitation (36 sessions totalling 72 hours )
enhanced thinking skills (20 sessions totalling 40 hours ) taken together
what was the aim of the programmes ?
self-control (thinking before acting) inter-personal problem solving skills social perspective taking critical reasoning skills cognitive style understanding the rules which govern behaviour
what were the results of this research ?
a significant drop in reconviction rates
recividism rates were 14% lower than comparison group
this reduction represents almost 21,000 crimes prevented
what is known as enhanced thinking skills ?
aims to reduced general reconviction rates by providing types of supervision for offending which are based on research and sound evidence, want to change the way the offenders think and behave
