Daly & Wilson Flashcards
what was daly and wilsons aim?
To find out if homicide rates would vary as a function of local life expectancy in Chicargo , a city divided into 77 neighborhoods wit relatively stable boundaries
what was their method?
a correlational study, using survey data from police records, school records and local demographic records collected by population census
procedure?
examined communities in chicargo which had lower than average life expectancies, then plotted various correlations
what was the average life expectancy ?
54.3 to 77.4 years
what were the findings ?
found that life expectancy proved to be the best predictor of neighborhood specific homicide rates , there was a strong negative at -0.88
what was another findings?
there was also a negative correlation between absenteeism from primary school and life expectancy had a correlation co-efficient at -0.5
what was a conclusion?
they said this could be explained by a short-term horizon , the boys see little point in working hard at school because they do not imagine a long future for themselves while their parents don’t force to attend because they they all operate on a short time horizon. This makes them more likely to take risks and become involved in crime according to evolutionary psychology theorists
