changes in life that are out of our control getting married having a child death lose of a loved one natural disaster
what does kanner look into?
comparison of 2 methods of stress measurement
what is the aim of this research ?
to compare the hassles and uplifts scale and berkman life events scale as predictors of psychological symptoms of stress
what method was used ?
a repeated measures design in that each participants completed all scales
what scales were used ?
hassles rating scale life events scale psychological symptoms using: Hopkins symptom checklist bradburn morale scale
who were the participants ?
100 people(mostly white) 216 initially contacted , 109 agreed , 9 dropped out
what was the procedure ?
all tests were sent out one month before the study
p/s completed the hassles rating scale for 9 months
completed the life events after 10 months
the HSCH and bradburn every month for 9 months
what conclusions were drawn ?
hassles are a more powerful predictor of stress than life events , hassles contribute to psychological symptoms whatever the life events that has happened
what were the findings ?
hassels were consistent from months to month
hassles frequency correlated positively with psychological symptoms on HSCL
for women the more life events they reported the more hassles and uplifts they reported
